PPA Atari Packaging
As a part of the 2019 Paperboard Packaging Alliance's Student Design Challenge, I worked with other graphic designers and packaging designers to create new packaging for the Atari Flashback 8 Gold Edition console.
The Challenge
The main requirements for the competition were that the package must be made of 100% paper-based material (70% paperboard), that it must house at least one on the market console and controller, and that the packaging must be able to be used somehow while you're playing the video game. You can read more about the competition here.
The Console
We chose to design packaging for the Atari Flashback 8 Gold Edition console. We wanted to design a package that was unique, exciting to open, inspired a feeling of nostalgia, and would visually compete with more modern consoles on the market.
Final Design
Our packaging solution was a combination of sleek, modern design with nods to old-school gaming. The 8-bit text on the sides list some of the 120 pre-loaded games, and the gold line motif is inspired by the Atari's home screen.
Once the gamer opens the package, the box transforms into a stand that houses your console while gaming. Since there’s no way to keep track of your high scores on the actual Atari console, the back flap features an erasable leaderboard. Ideally this leaderboard would be printed on Rocket Book paper, which allows gamers to use an app to take a photo and instantly uploads their scores to the cloud.
